Smells like… burnt dog hair…

Speaking of being burned, what is going on today?

It’s pretty hard to imagine some of the things people do to other creators in an industry where we should, I like to think, all be drawing strength from each other.  Maybe I’m naive.  Or a Socialist.  Or, most likely, just really lucky in the interactions I’ve had with other professionals in comics (he says, not believing for an instant he ranks as a ‘pro’ himself yet).  I guess I kind of get what’s happening with Marvel, since it’s a corporation, run by an even larger corporation, with a ton of lawyers between them both just aching for people to sue.  But it still breaks my heart a little.

What do you do?  One person I read posted “work alone, or never work with friends, at least.”  I can’t agree with that.  Not just because, as a writer, I heavily rely on the artists I work with.  It’s way more than that.  So far, I’ve only worked with people who are my closest friends.  People that inspire me, that I love hanging out with, and bring out the best in me, creatively.  If I didn’t work with them, I would lose much of why I want to make comics in the first place.

I just can’t see them trying to get one over on me like that, and I certainly wouldn’t do it to them.  But, again, that may be naivety again.  And I guess I’m okay with not knowing any better, if it means I can still trust in my friends and partners.

Meanwhile, go here and stand with Gary.  Help show Marvel’s lawyers that they should drop this one.  It’s the right thing to do.
