Personal Space!! Personal Space!!
Speaking of personal space, I guess this coming weekend is Comic-Con!
We, uh… we won’t be there.
To be honest, I sometimes wonder if I’m really missing out, having never been to the San Diego Convention. Commonly, it’s considered the ultimate in all the cons… But that comes with the caveats that it’s nearly impossible to get in, impossible to move around, impossible to see all you want to see, impossible to afford, and so on.
Now, I’ve gone (but not guested) to WonderCon more than once (when they were in the Bay Area, not last year, when they moved locations). I really want to go to APE at some point, because I’m guessing (although I may be wrong) that it’s more like what you get in the Artist Alley in the other cons. I love meeting the creators, especially in a one-on-one setting, which you get a lot closer to in the Alley than you do when they’re under a huge DC or Marvel banner (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
You can complain that the Cons have gotten taken over by mainstream media. That it’s more movies and television than comics. But you know what, that’s perfectly fine. There’s nothing wrong with there being something for everybody. But if you’re there because you love great comics and art and storytelling… there’s no shortage of it. People record a lot of the Panels. You can buy from a ton of the retailers online. You can oggle cosplayers as well.
Meeting artists… And that means ones you already know and love, or finding new ones coming right out of the gate, the ones you’ll wind up worshipping tomorrow… That’s available at cons like no other place. And if you know another place, like your local comic shop or bookstore, you should go there too! Often. And bring money. And treats. And be nice.
If you’re going this week, have a blast!
