If we get there and he doesn’t have some Fruit Stripe gum, I’m gonna’ be livid.
I don’t have any personal stories about Joe Kubert. But the thing with Joe, I think, much like Mike Wieringo when he passed away five years ago, is that you wind up knowing so many people that do, it hits home just as much.
Probably the thing that made the biggest impact on me with Joe’s life’s work is his school. My heroes are always those who take the things they know and are great at and spend their time teaching it to others. That could be my friends at The Comic Book Diner, or someone like Leo Laporte. I know that, when I was still just barely aware that comics could be a thing people could make for a living, hearing about the Kubert School gave comics a real legitimacy for a carear path. But that pales in comparison to how many artists got started there. Teaching allowed Joe to make an impact much farther and wider than just his art itself could ever reach.
Thank you, Joe.
